Modal Shift Pilot Program

The proposed pilot program aims to promote modal shift to waterways and increase logistics efficiency, in order to boost the low-carbon potential of water transport and contribute to Bangladesh’s national emissions reduction targets for the transport sector.

Low Carbon Strategy for IWT sector

Interventions aimed at improving the performance of existing IWT and logistic ecosystem in terms of commercial viability, sustainability and carbon efficiency with ensuring better and greener transport

Pilot Program Implementation Plan

To implement the pilot, preparatory interventions have to be undertaken. This includes “hard interventions” with infrastructure building & rehabilitation and “soft interventions” with institutional and regularity arrangements

IWT Facts and figures

IWT based optimal logistics chain must provide a clear value proposition for its customers - IWT should be efficient, reliable and consistent. Efficient control, management and planning requires information on the extent to which objectives are reached.

Modal Shift Pilot Program

The proposed pilot program aims to promote modal shift to waterways and increase logistics efficiency, in order to boost the low-carbon potential of water transport and contribute to Bangladesh’s national emissions reduction targets for the transport sector.

The program will build on the pillars of the low carbon strategy and provide a testbed to showcase the value proposition IWT can offer in absence of the currently prevailing barriers.

Low Carbon Strategy for IWT sector

The improving carbon efficiency for any IWT system is based on three pillar:

  • Improvements with IWT Sector: Interventions aimed at improving the performance of existing IWT and logistic ecosystem in terms of commercial viability, sustainability and carbon efficiency.
  • Reduction in Overall Transport Demand: Steps required to reduce the transport demand for reaching IWT terminals as well as reducing trip lengths.
  • Modal Shift to Carbon Efficient Modes: Interventions aimed at promoting shift to more energy efficient modal choice viz. IWT ensuring better sustainability and greener transport

This endeavour reconfirms Government of Bangladesh’s commitment to reducing carbon footprint of overall transport ecosystem.
